THE ANSELM LOGO

The Anselm Institute takes is name and much of its inspiration from one of the premier theologians of  the Church, Anselm of Canterbury who in the Eleventh Century provided a model of deep and disciplined reflection on Christian truth and left a lasting legacy in several areas of theology. In his Proslogium he explored the reasons we have for believing in God and left us with the puzzling and     yet compelling "Ontological Argument.  In his work Cur Deus Homo (Why God Became Man) he examined  the current theories of what Jesus did in bringing us salvation through his Death and   offered a more profound understanding of that central teachlng.

In addition to being a profound thinker, he was a man of action, much involved with  the sometimes twisted path of the Church in his time. In many respects he is fellow Christian to be admired and imitated.   One of his lasting legacies is this pithy remark on the relationship between faith and reason:

"Nor do I seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe that I may understand. For this, too, I believe, that, unless I first believe, I shall not understand." He held that faith precedes reason, but that reason can expand upon faith.  This is summarized as:

FAITH SEEKING UNDERSTANDING

We have taken the essense of that thought and designed the LOGO for the Institute:

The Book is open,

but further pages are yet to be turned.  We have
much new truth to uncover.

The Flame is a symbol of the Holy Spirit
without Whose aid we cannot comprehend the Truth and
Who inspired the Scriptures.

The Body of the Torch is a Fish Symbol, an ancient symbol of
Christ, since in Greek the word for Fish - IXTHUS - is made up of the first
letters in the ancient creed: "Jesus Chrst, of God, Son, Savior"  Christ is
the key to all Truth
